INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Two instructional activities are recommended. One is to have the students anonymously complete the Cyber Savvy Balance of Life survey found at http://embracingdigitalyouth.org. Then analyze and discuss their findings. By identifying the normative data for the student in the class, or a group of classes, hopefully those students whose usage is excessive in comparison will realize the need for change. The students could then be asked to write a brief essay or create some form of message related to keeping their life in balance.

The other suggestion is to follow the guidance of a university professor who challenged her students to take twenty-four hours to unplug from all media—with the exception of a class blog where they could write their impressions.5 This project, called “24 Hours Unplugged: A Day Without Media,” provided some excellent insight into how these college students were using media. To focus in on more of the Internet and texting issues, a middle school or high school day might simply be a day without texting and the Internet and the requirement to keep a written journal.
